What is Neurology?

Neurology is a medical speciality dealing with disorders of the nervous system. To be specific, Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of condition and disease involving central & peripheral nervous system. Nervous system include brain & its covering, blood vessels of the brain.Further spinal cord, nerves and few muscle disorders are also part of the nervous system.

A neurologist is a physician specializing in Neurology and trained to investigate, diagnose and treat neurological disorder.

There are many different disorders of neurology for which people need to consult Neurologist.
In the brain some of the conditions commonly seen include:

  • Brain stroke – Occlusion or rupture of the artery supplying the brain.
  • Headache & Migraine – Migraine, a type of headache almost 15-20% of the population suffer from.
  • Meningitis & Encephalitis – Infection of brain and its coverings.
  • Epilepsy – Episodes of seizures that can vary from brief and nearly undetectable to long- periods of vigorous shaking.
  • Dementia – Memory loss and inability to think and reason clearly that is severe enough to affect a person’s daily functioning.
  • Multiple Sclerosis – Inflammatory disease in which the insulating cover i.e .myelin of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia – Terrible electric shock like facial pain that can be treated by various drugs.
  • Hemifacial spasm – Involuntary contraction of facial muscles and muscles around eye/s treated by botulinum toxin.

Some of the spinal conditions evaluated which present as weakness in lower or upper limbs, bladder disturbances, abnormal sensation in limbs include multiple sclerosis, “slipped” disc, various back pain, deficiency of vitamins.

Peripheral nervous system disorder include:

  • Gullian-Barre’ Syndrome – Weakness and loss of sensation in lower limbs and upper limbs and can effect respiratory muscles as well.It is a neurological emergency.
  • Peripheral neuropathy – Damage occurring to nerves due to various medical conditions, toxin, infection, vitamin deficiency, cancer and drugs, presenting as numbness, burning in legs and hands, and weakness.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – burning and weakness in the hands, often worse at night
  • Myasthenia Gravis – A disorder where in fatiguability and weakness of various muscles of the body noted including diplopia & droping of eyelids.
  • Polymyositis – Inflammation of muscle causing weakness of proximal limb muscles.
